Mmmm, fresh vanilla pods, they smell SOOOO GOOD!
Grown for the first time in Australia (apparently, I'd need to research that to verify it as fact) and sold at my local farmer's market by the Spice Lady.
I'm going to give making my own vanilla essence a go.

Oh yum!! Were they expensive? They are here in the supermarket and they aren't even very good. Listening to some people who grow vanilla on the radio, they say you should be able to tie a good pod in a knot.
Lovely, aren't they! I don't think she's the first to grow them here though - I buy them from a guy in Port Douglas, FNQ (Vanilla Australia) who's been growing them for years and making organic vanilla extract with no preservatives or flavour enhancers. Wish I could grow them myself! :)
Yep Jo, I wasn't at all sure about that claim. I'll look into your Port Douglas guy if mine doesn't work out, just looked at our vanilla extract last night and it has preservative in it. Why have I never looked at that before??
Lottie, they were $3.50 each, not sure how that stacks up, and yes, I'm pretty sure I could tie them in a knot. They are gorgeous and plump!
Hadn't looked at the preservatives and flavour enhancers on the vanilla before - I will now. Are you going to make vanilla sugar as well with the left over pods?
